Passageway
In this project I investigate the definition of ‘in between space’ as for conceptual and physical space. In between space is neither in one place or another. For me it is the learning that occurs culturally and mentally.
I interpret this concept by designing a step ladder, upon the acknowledgement of its symbolic function of passageway between places and the journey in which the destination is out of sight or unknown.
In the work unfired clay forms the body of the step ladder, which lies on a wooden structure composed of aligned wooden pins anchored on the floor. With this arrangement of materials I want to emphasize the application of the negative space in the construction and the contrast between the materials’ physical and aesthetic qualities. By exploiting the ambiguousness of the object I invite contemplation for its metaphorical and functional role.

Visual artist Manuel Canu (IT) has a Bachelor in 3D Ceramics Design at Bath Spa University, England, and now lives and work in Copenhagen.
In his installations Manuel creates fictitious architectural structures, where he predominantly uses unfired clay as a building material. The modeled clay is intentionally left to dry through the exhibition period, a process of mutation, shrinking, cracking and at times falling into pieces. Manuel uses those qualities in his work to expose the fragility of place and space. He explores relationships between physicality and immateriality; familiarity and remoteness; fragility and stability.
His work has mainly been exhibited internationally through public and non-profit institutions.
